on a cold winter's night

Make yourself a pot of soup. Pour a glass of wine. Grab a blanket. And curl up with a good book (see below).

JCB's new fiction picks for the winter:

* Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel
* Once on a Moonless Night, by Dai Sijie (A.S. Byatt's review here)
* Remarkable Creatures, by Tracy Chevalier

Alternate activities may include watching Cranford (and Return to Cranford) on Masterpiece Theater. Here's hoping you are staying warm...somehow!

  3. Okay - so now I have three MORE books to add to the "to read" list I've been putting together! So many books, so little time ;o) And I watched the wonderful Cranford (again) a few days ago. Will have to catch Return to as well.

  4. JCB, have you ever read the book Cranford? I understand the TV series is an amalgam of Cranford and other stories by Mrs. Gaskell. I love the book. There's something about the pace of the book that fits a cold winter's night - to be read, knees up on a sofa, in a library by the light of a flickering fire, a glass of port to hand with a slice of home-made fruit cake. Nod quietly away till bed time.

  6. Janet, Have you started Wolf Hall? I have it on the next to read, after going about 50 pages and coming to a halt.Must be brave and begin again. g

  7. Christine ~ I think you would love all of these books!

Blue ~ I am embarrased to say I have not read Cranford. I am generally loathe to watch a movie before I have read the book, but how can I resist Masterpiece Theater? In this case however, I think it will be interesting to see how they weave the stories together.

Gaye ~ Yes! I have started it and am really enjoying it. Not quite 50pages in...so will let you know how things progress. But then, I am a sucker for heavy historical dramas!

  8. You captured the light of that time of day beautifully - such a magical time when there is a blanket of snow on the ground!
