something worth saving

The plight of Edith Wharton's magnificent home, The Mount, has been the talk of the historic preservation community in recent months. And lately, it has been buzzing around the blog world. I've mentioned it before, and Courtney and Meg have posted about it recently too. Quite simply ~ every penny counts!

some things

I know I promised to show you a few more of my favorite objects. And I am stalling. I have been so busy...and the light has been terrible in my apartment (all this rain!). So instead, I'm sharing some yummy, inspiring things as styled by Faye Toogood (found via Scout Holiday). Enjoy!

nyc flying by

Ahhh...it is good to be home. A quick trip to New York. As always, lots to do, lots to see. And for you ~ a few goodies from the big city:

* Jasper Johns Gray (at the Met)
* Maya Elise Joseph-Goteiner (especially 191 East 2nd Street)
* Shaker delights (at the Bard)

Happy monday all!

back in focus

What a difference a day makes! A warm spring day...and all sorts of lovely green things have sprung up. There's a little patch of wilderness in the park across from work...and if you squint hard enough and mentally crop out the grey government buildings in the background, you can almost imagine yourself in a secret garden.

I am off to New York for a few days. Be well. I'll type to you next week.

rain, rain go away

Oh, it is so grey and dreary! Even my camera is uninspired, ugh. So here are a few things brightening my day:

* Virginia Johnson (love the scarves!)
* birds' nests (via the glass doorknob)
* and asparagus (yum)

Happy tuesday!

meet me in st. louis

Just back from a lovely weekend in St. Louis for the wedding of a good friend. Grey skies above, but lots of sunny smiles and champagne toasts. It was an enchanted evening full of soft gardenias and satin dancing shoes. Congratulations to a sweet couple!

the blue bowl

It's funny how there are a few random objects that find their way into our hearts ~ like a favorite mug or a well-worn cashmere sweater. For me, one of those things is a bowl given to me years ago by a friend, a thank you for hosting her baby shower. It is a small bowl, handmade, with the most perfect blue glaze. It isn't fancy and doesn't match anything else I have, but for some reason I always seem to reach for it. And last night when I snapped this photograph, I was reminded of a story in the July 2007 issue of Vogue about Irving Penn, and his description of a favorite lamp. I would love to hear about some of your favorite objects...and I promise to show you a few more of mine in the next couple weeks.

I am off for some travels, but will be back monday. Until then...enjoy these lovely spring days. xo.

evening shadows

Last night as I was walking up to Capitol Hill to meet a friend for dinner I noticed the shadows of a cherry blossom tree against one of those typically drab Federal buildings. It looked like a Japanese watercolor. I just stood there for a few minutes and watched the shadows shift as the sun set. One of those beautifully ethereal moments.

A couple things I am currently enjoying:

* Bing Wright (love the "fly disasters")
* this album (on repeat)
* and the Public Library of Public Library Deaccession (fascinating!)

Cheers...and happy tuesday!

family threads

When I was down in Texas, my great aunt decided to go through her cedar chest and passed along some old family linens ~ several sets of embroidered napkins, a couple table cloths (including the one below, monogrammed by my great-great-grandmother), and a set of linen sheets that belonged to my great-great-grandparents. The "R" is for von Rosenberg. I love the idea of having things that have been passed down through several generations of women.

Hope you had a lovely weekend. I hosted my stitching group sunday ~ a knitter, a quilter, a cross-stitcher, and a needlepointer ~ all co-existing in perfect harmony! It was such fun to see everyone's projects progressing so beautifully. I also think it is so special to have this time with women, to just revel in each other's company and creativity. Well (*sigh*) it's now back to the daily grind...

trouvée: the beads

This was my big splurge at Round Top ~ $7.00! I'd like to think she's a little girl from Texas, but the image is unidentified so I have no way of knowing. I love the three strands of beads and those pale pink cheeks.

It has been a while since I gave you some photo links, so here are a few favorites from Texas:

* Revealing Character (modern-day cowboys)
* Texas native Jayne Hinds Bidaut (and her tintypes)
* and an amazing collection at the Ransom Center

On monday I have something special to show you... Until then, have a wonderful weekend. xo.

round top

One of the highlights of my trip was the Round Top Antiques Fair. Ten miles of barns and tents full of goodies. It's almost too much! I didn't get anything other than some fabulous old photographs and snapshots (easy to carry home). Here are a few other things I loved...but didn't buy! Enjoy. I'll be back tomorrow with a found photo and a Texas round-up!

blue skies and oak trees

Just home from a week in Texas...oh, it was good to see green leaves and blue skies! And drink bloody Marys and eat brisket. And visit with family. I must admit I was a little lazy about taking photographs...in fact, I was pretty much lazy about everything. But, I do have a few goodies to share, so stay tuned.

spring shadows

Oh, I really was hoping to have more than a just a couple photographs from Evergreen today, but I am just too swamped. However, the amazing Meg has posted some great shots here (along with some fun history)! So I instead will leave you with a few of my favorite details ~ espaliered tulip trees and spring shadows on the patio. I am off on vacation ~ I'll see you later next week...
