in pursuit of ugly

Fall produce is unapologetically ugly. Seriously...who was the first person to look at a rutabaga and think: "I'll have that for dinner"!? And yet I can't resist all those gnarled root vegetables. Beets are my favorites ~ especially when roasted (a few good tips here). Slice, dice, puree, and roast ~ fall cooking is so much fun (especially when you have time to do it)!

I thought this article was interesting. What do you think?

Roasted Brussel Sprouts are a holiday favorite of mine every year!

Can't wait to see the new paint job. Yes, I always end up with half the can on me and half on the wall too.

My Mother-in-law tells us of many a meal feasted on "tulip bulbs" during the war in Europe. She is one strong woman with an amazing foundation, built to last. Survival of the fittest during tough times and then the lure for something unique, gnarled, like a celeriac root and with so much flavor. I shall send you one of my personal favorite recipes for this root.
Sure to bring on a root and a holler!

Love that second picture! I like beets, cooked but not too much, and sliced into large matchstick pieces. My husband adds something to it (I should ask him what) and they're delicious. I always feel like I'm doing something healthy when I eat them.

Abby ~ love Brussels sprouts too! I have a great recipe of roasted sprouts with mustard cream sauce...will have to post it.

pve ~ necessity is the mother of invention. I salute all the women who have peeled, cooked and fed their families though good times and bad. Am looking forward to dishing up some celeriac root.

Michelle ~ matchstick beets! I am intrigued...
