my snowy valentine

The gentleman sent this to me yesterday. He has a sense of humor.

Right now, I can barely see the trees in my neighbor's back garden for the swirls of snow. A blizzard warning has been posted and we are all hunkered down. Sipping tea. Baking quiche. Stitching, reading. And nursing some big bad bruises. I spent hours outside yesterday, clearing my car, and trying to clean snow off the remaining trees around the building. I salvaged some downed red bud and dogwood branches, and brought them inside to force. My forcing, etc. book says I should have red bud blooms by mid March. Nothing about the dogwood. Has anyone ever tried it? Regardless, the branches are beautifully sculptural.

Take care, wherever you are. xo!

I know my grandma used to force dogwood branches in her kitchen each winter from the dogwoods in their yard. I don't know how but it is possible! They were always beautiful.
I'm actually at work (yes i'm crazy) - the walk in was fun and I got some great snapshots that I'll post on my blog at lunch!

AD ~ thanks for giving me hope for the dogwood. And, you are CRAZY!

Stephen--Are you crazy?? Why are you not home watching 24 hour news coverage and catching up on your blogs like the rest of us.

J-My grandmother also use to force dogwoods in the winter, but the only thing I remember about it was that it was in a sun room off her kitchen that she kept ridiculously hot. Good luck!

I love the card from your Valentine! Stay warm and safe...orders from Maine (where we have almost no snow!)

May the force be with you. Hope better weather ahead and soon.

great idea to salvage the storm detritus - and enjoy spring inside - feels like the mid-atlantic up here in the new england - very little snow compared to the pictures from your part of the country - have only forced forsythia - smash the ends of the branch with a hammer

I was outside too shoveling! I know, crazy, but it was so sunny and pretty with the little bit of snow we have here. there is nothing better than sipping that first cup of tea with flushed cheeks after all that outside activity.
i love the valentine's!

Janet, that'll teach you to leave the temperate climate of Maine for the big cold city....

Wonderful Valentine.
