This year I am trying very hard to keep presents simple, but thoughtful. And so, here are some of the things I will be giving this year:
To keep them warm and happy:
* hand-knit Irish mittens
* a special tin of tea
* vintage tea towels and French soap
* hand-dipped candles wrapped up with a pretty box of matches
To tickle their palette:
* a bottle of Virginia dessert wine tied up with a little felt bird
* sea-salt caramels (my father's favorite)
* or a jar of spicy plum chutney
To support the arts:
* a special Christmas ornament
* my favorite notecards
I have tried very hard to buy from local businesses and crafts people, and to support cultural institutions such as museums, historic houses, gardens, and other non-profit organizations. I also would love to know some of your own gift ideas.
And, my dear friends and loved ones, I hope I haven't given away too many surprises...!

Great to see Monticello products in your list! Purchases there support important work in preservation and education.
I, too, try to support our national treasures -for me it is Taliesin.
I'm crazy about the green birds and red wax seal on the wine!
I love those felt birds, too!! These are lovely ideas. I also try to support my own area's local business and museums, etc., it makes the gifts feel like double blessings.
I have been hopping through student art sales here in Columbus and have found some fun little prints!
Always the inspiration, jcb.
Lovely suggestions.
Lovely blog.
those mittens look so comfy
A little late, but never too early to prepare for the coming Christmas. I love all your simple gestures.
Those green birds are so me, along with everything else on your list.
