a few days in the sun

Back north. Home from Atlanta. I miss all the green leaves! And the heady scent of flowers.

Just a little preview of what's to come from the majestic Swan House. . . in the mean time, there is a garden to be planted. And lots of work to catch up on.

Cheers!

Swan House is absolutely lovely. I like that the garden side faces the road, a conceit that I often use in my own work.

Karena ~ thank you! The house is just so classically elegant. I think you will enjoy it.

Classicist ~ I really pondered that, wondering if I liked it or not. Then I walked down the terrace a bit, looked back and realized how fabulous to have an uninterrupted view to the house.

The Swan House is beautiful and you know that it has one of the few extant decorative schemes by Ruby Ross Wood. She was born in Georgia at Monticello - pronounced Mon'sella according to one of my students who's from there.

Well, you are still below the Mason-Dixon :)

Janet, the pictures are just wonderful. Everything I hoped for.

I was able to get a stray magnolia branch from the back of a landscaping truck -- hoping it might bloom indoors.

Green leaves? Temperatures over 45? I keep hearing about this phenomenon called Spring, but can't say I've experienced it.

Swan House *Swoon*. What a satisfying work.

Hopefully this weekend's rain will set your herb garden off to a great start! xo

Your pictures are hauntingly beautiful. Love the interplay of light and shadow and that Swoon for of a house.

Good luck with that planting. Your wedding pictures with flowers adored with herbs plucked from your garden still enchant. Leave it to you to make edible boutonnieres!

I'm envious, Janet - have long wanted to see Swan House. Looking forward to more posts. (re: one comment: your home may be below Mason-Dixon line, but in now way is is in the South!)

Blue ~ I saw the house for the first time many years ago and the interiors were still being restored. It was really great to see them again with the sassy color schemes and wallpaper.

Courtney ~ thank you! I think it is hard to take a bad photograph at Swan House. There are a few more to upload. . . perhaps over the weekend.

DED ~ let's talk in July.

Stefan ~ you will be coming over for a mojito, no?

hbd ~ have been thinking about your woodsy wonderland. And all the green it will have to offer! And just so you know, I don't think anyone actually consumed their boutonnieres :).

JBR ~ how right you are! Spoken like a Virginia gentleman.

hbd ~ I also mean to say, what fun it would be to photograph your garden. . .
